Most cells expressed a low HMGB1 mRNA labeling at all time points. To be able to compare the relative frequencies of cells with HMGB1 protein expression to those of cells with upregulated HMGB1 mRNA expression, an estimation of expression scores similar to that used in Table 1 was used for in situ results; cells with numerous grains were regarded as positive. HMGB1, high-mobility group chromosomal box protein 1; M.A.I., mean arthritis index; p.i., post-immunization.
