The extracellular matrix of cartilage is composed of proteoglycans attached to a backbone
of hyaluronic acid that is intertwined among collagen fibrils. Proteoglycans have
both chondroitin-sulfate- and keratin-sulfate-rich regions, and link proteins facilitate
binding of aggrecan to hyaluronic acid.
