Histological sections were collected at the indicated time points and stained with safranin O. Note in both the six-week and 10-week PMX and 10-week MTX surgery groups the loss of proteoglycan staining (arrowhead) in the superficial layers and in the 10-week PMX there is delamination of the superficial layer (arrow).
